How I engage my audience Back when I was in the military, I was told to disseminate information to the public about hypothermia and how to survive it (new info at the time). I made presentations at high schools that were wildly popular. With the school gathered on the athletic field, I’d land a helicopter in the middle of the field, and really engage the kids in the material. Kids never forgot the presentations, and demand poured in from schools all over America. I received a commendation from General Westmoreland for my work in this area. I know how to keep people engaged through some of the more serious material.
Why I Work in US and Australia
Years ago, while serving as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam war, I worked closely with a number of our Australian allies. They taught me a lot, and we became good friends. We kept in touch after the war, and I attended reunions, including one in 2001. My buddy Dave Benge offered to put me up at his place, and we went out to a pub together for a couple beers. There, I met a woman named Nikki Marsh, an artist and teacher. We hit it off, but I lost her phone number (dang!). When I came back for the reunion on Anzac Day 2002, I asked Dave if he could find her again. Fortunately, he did—and we were married in August 2008. Today, we have residences in both the USA and Australia.
Captain Tom has taught us the boat skills and maneuvering skills to make us "new boaters" feel comfortable on the water and able to enjoy boating safely.

I'm
Captain Tom Staadt. I’ve learned a lot of things about boating the hard way, but I like to help you do them the easy way. Boating should be fun—and the things I teach help keep it that way.
I’ve been boating for a lot of years--ever since I was sixteen. That was the year I bought my first boat—and promptly sank it. That year, I also got a job working at a boat dealer and then as a mechanic in boat yards. I’ve learned a lot about yachts and other boats since then.
